The maker behind Seven Scents
Shannon Willoughby, founder of Seven Scents
I handcraft our essential oils, home fragrance and perfume by hand, in small batches, from our studio in Lyall Bay, Wellington - and I write most of what you'll find here on The Scent Journal.
Why I write about scent
I didn't come to fragrance as a marketer who spotted a gap - I came to it as someone whose life was genuinely changed by it. Before Seven Scents I lived a few different lives: a World Champion Black Fern, then a qualified commercial pilot and flying instructor. A stroke at 32, completely out of the blue, grounded me for good.
While I was recovering - looking for anything to ease the stress and help me sleep - I found my way to essential oils. I was a total sceptic at first. Then I noticed it working: less stress, a lifted mood, and finally some proper, restful sleep. The non-believer was hooked, and kitchen experiments slowly turned into a passion, and then a business.
So when I write about which oil helps you wind down, or how to get a wax melt to throw its scent across a room, it comes from years of actually blending it, testing it on myself first, and living with it in my own home. I share my own experience as exactly that - my story, not medical advice. Aromatherapy sits alongside professional care, never in place of it.
How I make everything
Every product is handcrafted in small batches here in Lyall Bay, so I can check the quality of each one before it goes out. Everything is 100% vegan and cruelty-free - our balms and skincare use candelilla wax, never beeswax - and nothing is ever tested on animals. Just on me. Tested on Shannon first, never on animals.
After more than seven years of this - first as Aromarrr, now as Seven Scents - I've learned that the difference between a nice scent and one you reach for every day is all in the details: the balance of the notes, the quality of the oils, and the care taken making it.
There's a longer version of how Seven Scents began, and the three meanings behind the name, over on our About page.
Come and have a browse: everything I write about is on the shelves - handcrafted essential oils, wax melts, reed diffusers, perfume and more, all made here in Lyall Bay.
