DIY Essential Oil Blends

DIY Essential Oil Blends: 15 Diffuser Recipes for Every Mood

There's something genuinely satisfying about creating your own essential oil blends. Instead of being limited to pre-made options, you get to craft scents perfectly suited to your preferences, your mood, and your needs. Plus, once you understand the basics of blending, a world of aromatic possibilities opens up.

In our Lyall Bay studio, we've spent years experimenting with different essential oil combinations – some brilliant, some less so (let's just say certain experiments stay in the "lessons learned" category). The good news? We've done the trial and error so you don't have to.

This guide shares 15 of our favourite diffuser blend recipes, organised by purpose, plus the fundamentals of essential oil blending so you can confidently create your own signature scents. Whether you're looking to unwind after work, boost your focus, support restful sleep, or simply make your home smell wonderful, there's a blend here for you.

Understanding Essential Oil Notes: The Foundation of Great Blends

Before diving into specific blended recipes, it helps to understand how aromatherapists think about scent. Like music, fragrances are described in "notes" – and understanding these helps you create blends that smell balanced and last longer.

Top Notes

These are the scents you notice first when you smell a blend. They're typically light, fresh, and uplifting – think citrus oils like lemon, orange, and grapefruit, or refreshing scents like peppermint and eucalyptus. Top notes evaporate quickly, usually within 1 to 2 hours, which is why blends made entirely of citrus oils don't linger as long.

Middle Notes

Also called "heart notes," these form the body of your blend and emerge as the top notes fade. Middle notes are often floral, herbal, or spicy – oils like lavender, rosemary, geranium, and ylang ylang. They have harmonising and balancing properties that help tie a blend together.

Base Notes

These are the deep, grounding scents that anchor your blend and help it last longer. Base notes include oils like frankincense, cedarwood, sandalwood, vetiver, and patchouli. They evaporate slowly – sometimes lasting a full day – and give your blend staying power.

The 30/50/20 Rule

A popular guideline for balanced blends is the 30/50/20 ratio: 30% top notes, 50% middle notes, and 20% base notes. This creates a fragrance that's immediately pleasant (thanks to the top notes), has a satisfying body (from the middle notes), and lasts well (because of the base notes).

That said, rules are meant to be broken – especially in aromatherapy. Some of the best blends ignore these ratios entirely. Use them as a starting point, then trust your nose.

Blending Tips for Success

Before we get to the recipes, here are a few tips to help you create great blends:

Start simple. Some of the best blends use just two or three oils. You rarely need more than six different oils in one blend – more than that and individual scents can get lost.

Add drops gradually. You can always add more, but you can't take away. Start with fewer drops and increase if needed.

Let blends "marry." When creating a blend to store, let it sit for 24 to 48 hours before final judgment. Essential oils need time to meld together, and the scent will evolve.

Keep notes. When you create a blend you love, write down the exact ratios immediately. Trust us – you'll forget otherwise.

Quality matters. Pure essential oils blend better and smell better than synthetic alternatives. All our essential oils are 100% pure, which makes a noticeable difference in your blends.

How to Use These Diffuser Blends

For most ultrasonic diffusers, add 6 to 10 drops of essential oil total to a full tank of water. The recipes below are designed for standard diffuser use – simply add the specified drops directly to your diffuser.

If you'd like to create a larger batch to store, multiply the recipe and combine in a dark glass bottle. Then add 5 to 8 drops from your pre-made blend to your diffuser as needed.

Now, let's get to the recipes.

Relaxation and Sleep Blends

These calming blends are perfect for winding down after a long day or creating a peaceful bedtime atmosphere.

1. Sweet Dreams Blend

A classic combination that promotes peaceful, restful sleep while creating a sense of comfort.

Why it works: Lavender is renowned for its calming properties, cedarwood provides warm, grounding notes that promote relaxation, and ylang ylang adds a soft floral touch that helps ease tension. This is one of our most requested blends for bedrooms.

2. Deep Relaxation Blend

For those nights when your mind won't stop racing and you need help truly unwinding.

Why it works: Frankincense has been used for centuries in meditation and relaxation practices. Combined with calming lavender and mood-lifting bergamot, this blend helps quiet anxious thoughts and prepare your mind for rest.

3. Stress Relief Blend

Perfect after a demanding day when stress feels overwhelming.

Why it works: This trio addresses stress from multiple angles – frankincense promotes feelings of peace and satisfaction, lavender eases tension, and ylang ylang helps balance emotions. It's a beautiful blend that smells as good as it works.

Focus and Energy Blends

Need to concentrate on a project, study for an exam, or just shake off the afternoon slump? These invigorating blends can help.

4. Mental Clarity Blend

A stimulating combination to sharpen focus and support concentration.

Why it works: Research has shown that peppermint can increase alertness and memory, lemon helps reduce errors and improve concentration, and rosemary has long been called the "herb of remembrance" for its cognitive-supporting properties. This is our go-to blend for work days.

5. Morning Wake-Up Blend

Start your day on the right foot with this bright, energising combination.

Why it works: Sweet orange is uplifting and mood-boosting, peppermint provides that crisp, clear-headed feeling, and rosemary helps you feel alert and ready to tackle the day. It's like sunshine in your diffuser.

6. Study Session Blend

Designed to help with memory retention and sustained concentration.

  • 2 drops Rosemary
  • 2 drops Lemon
  • 1 drop Basil

Why it works: Rosemary supports memory and mental clarity, lemon promotes focus and reduces mental fatigue, and basil has a clarifying effect that helps reduce mental fog. Great for students or anyone working on complex tasks.

Mood-Lifting Blends

Sometimes you just need something to brighten your spirits. These cheerful blends are perfect for lifting your mood.

7. Happiness Boost Blend

A joyful, uplifting combination that's impossible not to smile at.

Why it works: Citrus oils are natural mood lifters – bright, fresh, and energising. The addition of ylang ylang adds a soft floral depth and helps balance emotions. This blend fills a room with pure positivity.

8. Sunday Morning Blend

Relaxed, warm, and comforting – like a cosy weekend morning.

Why it works: This blend combines the cheerfulness of orange with the calm of lavender and the warmth of cedarwood. It's uplifting without being overstimulating – perfect for relaxed, peaceful mornings.

Respiratory Support Blends

During cold and flu season or when you're feeling congested, these blends can help support easier breathing.

9. Clear Breathing Blend

A classic combination for respiratory support during seasonal challenges.

Why it works: Eucalyptus and peppermint both contain compounds that support clear airways, lemon adds antimicrobial properties and freshness, and lavender provides soothing comfort. This is our most popular blend during winter months.

10. Seasonal Support Blend

A simple but effective trio for transitioning between seasons.

Why it works: This classic combination has been used by aromatherapists for decades. The three oils work synergistically – lavender soothes, peppermint opens and cools, and lemon cleanses. Keep this blend on hand year-round.

Home Freshening Blends

Make your home smell amazing while naturally neutralising unwanted odours.

11. Fresh and Clean Blend

A bright, fresh scent that makes any room feel cleaner.

Why it works: These three oils all have natural antimicrobial properties while creating a clean, spa-like atmosphere. Perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, or anywhere that needs freshening up.

12. Odour Eliminator Blend

Tackles stubborn odours from cooking, pets, or musty spaces.

Why it works: Citrus oils are excellent at cutting through and neutralising unpleasant smells rather than just masking them. Eucalyptus adds antimicrobial properties and a fresh, clean note. This blend works wonders in kitchens after cooking fish or curries.

13. Welcome Home Blend

Create a warm, inviting atmosphere when guests arrive.

  • 3 drops Sweet Orange
  • 2 drops Cinnamon (use sparingly – it's strong)
  • 1 drop Clove

Why it works: This blend evokes warmth and comfort – it smells like a welcoming home. The sweet orange keeps it bright and cheerful while cinnamon and clove add depth and cosiness. Particularly lovely in autumn and winter.

Specialty Blends

A few more blends for specific situations.

14. Muscle Comfort Blend

After physical exertion or when tension settles in your shoulders, diffuse this soothing blend.

Why it works: Peppermint has cooling properties that can help ease discomfort, lavender promotes relaxation and helps reduce tension, and eucalyptus supports the overall soothing effect. While diffusing won't directly reach your muscles, the aromatic experience can help you relax and unwind.

15. Insect Deterrent Blend

Keep unwanted visitors away during summer evenings.

Why it works: Citronella is well-known for its insect-repelling properties, and both lemon and eucalyptus add to this effect. Diffuse this blend on your deck or patio during summer barbecues and outdoor gatherings.

Creating Your Own Signature Blends

Once you're comfortable with these recipes, you'll likely want to experiment with your own creations. Here's a simple process:

Step 1: Decide on your purpose. What do you want this blend to do? Relax you? Energise you? Simply smell beautiful?

Step 2: Choose your oils. Pick 2 to 4 oils that suit your purpose, ideally including at least one from each note category (top, middle, base).

Step 3: Test before committing. Put a drop of each oil you're considering on separate cotton balls. Hold them together and waft them under your nose. This gives you a preview of how the oils will blend.

Step 4: Start with equal parts. Begin with equal drops of each oil, then adjust based on scent strength. Stronger oils like peppermint, clove, and eucalyptus typically need fewer drops.

Step 5: Record and refine. Write down your recipe and note what you'd change next time.

Essential Oil Blending Chart: Oils That Play Well Together

Here's a quick reference for combining oils:

Citrus oils (lemon, orange, grapefruit, bergamot) blend well with: florals, herbs, spices, and woods

Floral oils (lavender, ylang ylang, geranium) blend well with: citrus, herbs, and woods

Herbal oils (rosemary, peppermint, eucalyptus, basil) blend well with: citrus, florals, and woods

Spicy oils (cinnamon, clove, ginger) blend well with: citrus, florals, and woods

Woody oils (cedarwood, frankincense, sandalwood) blend well with: everything – they're excellent base notes that anchor any blend

Safety Reminders

While diffusing is one of the safest ways to use essential oils, a few precautions are important:

Diffuse in moderation. 30 to 60 minutes at a time is typically sufficient. More isn't necessarily better – over-exposure can cause headaches or irritation.

Ensure ventilation. Don't diffuse in completely sealed rooms. Some airflow is important.

Be cautious with pets. Many essential oils, particularly tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint, and citrus oils, can be harmful to cats and dogs. Ensure pets can leave the room, and watch for signs of distress.

Exercise care around children. Some oils (especially eucalyptus and peppermint) aren't recommended for use around young children. Research individual oils before diffusing in children's spaces.

Consider pregnancy. Some essential oils aren't recommended during pregnancy. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider or a qualified aromatherapist.

Use quality oils. These recipes are designed for 100% pure essential oils. Synthetic fragrance oils won't provide the same benefits and may not be safe for diffusing.

Ready to Start Blending?

Creating your own essential oil blends is one of the most enjoyable aspects of aromatherapy. You get complete control over the scents in your space, the satisfaction of crafting something yourself, and the ability to address your specific needs – whether that's better sleep, sharper focus, or simply a home that smells amazing.

Start with the recipes above, then don't be afraid to experiment. Some of your "mistakes" might become your favourite blends. And remember – if something doesn't turn out quite right, you've only used a few drops of oil. Just try again!
